Course Overview

The UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician develops the technical knowledge and practical skills required to work with electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises.

You will learn to select, install, connect, test, fault-find, repair and maintain low-voltage electrical wiring, circuits, equipment and control systems.

The course combines classroom training at the Burwood campus, structured online learning and practical workshop training at Revesby. It also covers electrical safety, CPR, low-voltage rescue, sustainable work practices, circuit design and compliance testing.

This qualification includes the Essential Performance Capabilities identified for unrestricted electrical licensing. However, completing the qualification alone does not automatically grant an electrician’s licence. Additional apprenticeship, work experience, assessment or regulatory requirements may apply

Entry Requirements & Eligibility

To enrol, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Hold a current Student visa
  • Demonstrate satisfactory completion of studies equivalent to an Australian Year 10 qualification
  • Provide evidence of upper-intermediate English language proficiency through one of the following approved tests:
    • IELTS
      • Overall band score of 6, or
      • Overall band score of 5.0 when packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or
      • Overall band score of 4.5 when packaged with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS
    • Cambridge English: Advanced, CAE
      • Score of 162, or
      • Score of 154 when packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or
      • Score of 147 when packaged with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS
    • Pearson Test of English Academic, PTE
      • Score of 42, or
      • Score of 36 when packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or
      • Score of 30 when packaged with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS
    • Occupational English Test, OET
      • A score of at least B for each test component
    • TOEFL iBT
      • Score of 46, or
      • Score of 35 when packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or
      • Score of 32 when packaged with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS
  • The English language test must have been taken within the two years immediately before the date of the visa application.

To successfully complete this course, you’ll need to:

  • Have access to a computer/laptop with webcam, microphone, headset/speakers, reliable internet, and Microsoft Office (or equivalent)
  • Maintain reliable internet access for online learning
  • Purchase the required electrical textbooks
  • Complete any required Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills evaluation
  • Provide the required electrician’s tools and scientific calculator
  • Wear safety glasses, protective gloves and safety-cap work shoes or boots
  • Follow all workshop safety requirements and unit prerequisite sequencing

Licensing Requirements

Electrical work in Australia is regulated, and a licence or permit is generally required for work on electrical installations operating above specified voltage limits.

This qualification forms part of an electrical licensing pathway, but graduates must also meet the requirements of the relevant state or territory regulator.

In NSW, additional requirements may include:

A Certificate of Proficiency issued through the relevant vocational training authority
Relevant supervised electrical wiring work experience
Demonstrated knowledge of the current Australian wiring rules
Evidence of employment and practical experience
Any further assessment required by NSW Fair Trading

Students should confirm current licensing requirements with the regulator in the state or territory where they intend to work. NSW Fair Trading outlines the qualification, experience and assessment requirements for electrical licences.

Course Delivery, Structure and Commitment

Duration: 147 to 156 weeks (including breaks)

Study Load: Approx. 20 scheduled hours per week, including 7.5 hours of classroom training, 7.5 hours of practical workshop training and 5 hours of structured online learning. Independent study, assessments and trainer support are completed in addition to scheduled learning.

Practical Training: Weekly supervised workshop training at the Revesby workshop

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT):

Students with previous study or relevant electrical experience may be eligible to have their existing skills recognised or receive credit for equivalent units.

Applications are assessed individually. Any approved reduction to an international student’s course duration will be recorded on the Confirmation of Enrolment or through PRISMS, as applicable.
